REFLEXOLOGY |
 |
What is Reflexology?
Reflexology is a simple form of natural,
complimentary, holistic therapy that can fit easily into most
people's daily lives. It is non-invasive and the client remains
fully clothed.
Reflexology is an ancient form of
complimentary medicine. The origins of Reflexology as a therapy can
be found in ancient civilisations such as Egypt, China and other
Eastern Cultures and has been used for thousands of years.
Today, many of the varying
techniques from these cultures have been developed to create the
therapy we now know as reflexology.
In 1913 Dr William Fitzgerald
introduced this therapy to the West as 'zone therapy'. He noted that
reflex areas on the feet and hands were linked to other areas and
organs of the body within the same zone.
In the 1930's Eunice Ingham further
developed this zone theory into what is now known as reflexology.
She observed that congestion or tension in any part of the foot is
mirrored in the corresponding part of the body.
The principle of Reflexology
is that the body is reflected in the feet and/or hands and can be accessed by the
therapist to encourage healing. The therapists' hands are used as a
tool to induce the body's natural healing powers and in doing so can
relieve a great deal of tension and congestion carried in our body
everyday. This healing energy helps to unblock and re-align
our body's natural balance.
A Reflexology treatment involves pressure, manipulation and massage to
the reflex points on the feet and/or hands in order to induce
relaxation, healing and a sense of wellbeing.
The stimulation to the feet or
hands can enhance blood flow, therefore improving circulation and
oxygen to all cells within the body.
More recently Reflexology therapy
has undergone rigorous scientific scrutiny and produced beneficial
results in many cases. It is both a diagnostic tool and a effective
holistic treatment.

How is
Reflexology used?
Reflexology treats the whole person,
not the symptoms of disease. Most people benefit from
treatment.
Although more commonly used on the
feet, reflexology can also be used on the hands just as effectively.
The biggest benefit of this is that, given the correct training,
people can be taught to maintain their own health through regular
use of hand reflexology.
What happens during the therapy?
On your first visit I will have a
preliminary chat to determine your present and past health and
lifestyle.
I then perform some foot or hand relaxing
exercises before the main treatment begins when I will apply gentle
pressure to either the hands or feet. The application and the effect
of the reflexology therapy is unique to each person.
A treatment session usually last
for about one hour. A course of treatment may be recommended
depending on your body's needs.
What are the benefits of
Reflexology Therapy?
Reflexology can have an overall
effect by stimulating the circulation, reducing tension and aiding
the elimination of waste products, thereby helping to restore the
body's natural functions to better health.
It can also be used more
specifically to help relieve a range of ailments such as:
- Stress, Tiredness,
Hypertension and Anxiety
- Headaches and
Fatigue
- Colds, Flu and
Sinusitis
- Irritable Bowel
Syndrome and other Digestive Disorders
- Asthma, Arthritis
and Sciatica
- Back, Neck and
Shoulder Pain
- Menstrual and
Menopausal Symptoms
- Circulatory
Problems
- Skin Problems

It is very flexible as it can be used for both
general health maintenance and to treat specific conditions as they
arise. Once your body is in
tune, it is wise to have regular treatments in order to maintain
health and well being.
Give it a try - your whole body
will thank you for it!
